KHV Screening PCR Test: instructions for customers

How many fish should be sampled?

There are two sample sizes only.

Samples for evaluation will be either 30 live fish or 150 live fish.

Fish supplied should be less than 16cm in length.

If you wish to have fish larger than 16cm screened please contact us.

How to take samples and send to CTL

All fish submitted for screening for KHV must be quarantined at temperatures between 23°C and 27°C for at least 2 weeks immediately prior to testing.

CTL can provide quarantine facilities for live fish less than 16cm in length for an additional charge on request, otherwise the responsibility for ensuring appropriate quarantine conditions fall entirely to the customer.

If you wish to have fish larger than 16 cm quarantined please contact us.

Live fish should be packed to meet all UK and EU health and welfare regulations and the method of delivery should not unduly stress the fish. The package should be clearly marked as live fish. All live fish supplied will be humanely killed to provide tissue samples.

The customer is responsible for all transportation costs of the fish.

The order number issued on your on-line booking receipt and your name and address must be enclosed with your samples.

The customer is responsible for all costs associated with the collection and transport of the samples.

Samples for testing can only be received from 08:30 to 17:00 Monday to Thursday.

Deliveries outside these times will be rejected unless by prior arrangement with CTL.

If you wish to send fish from outside the UK for screening, please seek advice from us on custom and import licence matters before ordering and submitting fish.

Results

30 Fish test
A negative test on all 30 fish, based on the assumption that the sensitivity and specificity of the test is 100%, indicates that there is a 95% confidence level that the prevalence of KHV from the population from which the fish came is less than 10%.
150 Fish test
A negative test on all 150 fish, based on the assumption that the sensitivity and specificity of the test is 100%, indicates that the prevalence of KHV from the population from which the fish came is less than 2%.

It should be noted that the more homogenous the original population (i.e. fish obtained from the same source) the more accurate this test becomes.

Where quarantine is provided by the customer, results will normally be dispatched by e-mail within 14 working days of the receipt of live fish for testing.

Where CTL provides quarantine, results will be dispatched by e-mail within 24 working days of receipt of live fish for testing.

Exceptions to this response time may occur on some occasions (e.g. Easter and Christmas). If this occurs you will be informed of the delay and given an estimated date for the delivery of the result.

Written results are available on request subject to an additional charge of £10+VAT.
